9 Marriage Myths––Debunked

Forget false matrimonial beliefs and learn true tips for living happily ever after
By Denise Schipani

Any husband or wife will tell you that when it comes to marriage, you can’t always believe what you hear. Whether it’s that getting hitched will turn your sex life sour, or that walking down the aisle can turn a slob into a neat-freak, it’s safe to say that marriage myths abound. And they can be harmful, if you believe such fictions as “Your spouse should be your best friend” or “If you fight, you’re on the road to divorce.” The reason these myths persist is because we are prone to idealizing marriage, says Pamela Garber, a New York City psychotherapist—and that can make it even harder to face reality. The good news is that reality can often be better than any romantic myth. Read on for 10 common (and erroneous) beliefs about marriage, plus expert advice on how to work towards creating your own real-life storybook ending instead. Read the rest of this entry »

State Of Matrimony

By Womans Day

Last year, the New York state legislature approved no-fault divorce, the last state to do so, siding with opponents who viewed the law as antiquated and passé. This landmark decision got us thinking about what other outdated marriage laws might exist in the U.S. Read on to find out which states have (or had) the wackiest rules around.

Montana

Marriage by proxy, which means someone stands in for a bride/groom who can’t be present at his/her wedding, is limited to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. But of the four states that allow the practice — California, Colorado, Texas and Montana — Montana is the only one that allows double-proxy weddings. Essentially, neither the bride nor groom has to show up. Call us old-fashioned, but it doesn’t seem like the ideal start to the biggest commitment of one’s life.

Arkansas

For a few months between 2007 and 2008, anyone under 18 could get married in Arkansas with parental consent. (Yes, even babies — as their parents agreed!) The original law was meant to allow pregnant teenagers to get married if their parents approved, but lawmakers forgot to put in an age minimum. The law was corrected in April 2008, making the minimum age 17 for boys and 16 for girls.

Delaware

Ever been dared to get married … as a prank? Neither have we. But apparently this happens often enough in Delaware that it’s actually an option when couples file for an annulment. Along with the basic reasons such as marrying “without the capacity to consent” or “under duress,” couples can now check “because of a jest or dare” when applying to dissolve their nuptials.

Kentucky

In Kentucky, it’s illegal to remarry the same man four times. Honestly, good for Kentucky: If you’ve already divorced him three times, someone should step in. Of course, as long as it’s different men, you can get married as many times as you like. Read the rest of this entry »

Wait a Minute……. That chair looks familiar!?!

This week’s Quest to re-invest winner is UNH, SEAC Trash to Treasure Yard Sale. As a supporter of green living and environmental sustainability we are happy to supply the yard sale with the large tent required to keep all the merchandise protected.  At UNH, students throw away an immense amount of usable material at the end of the year.  The approximate 6,000 students that live on campus (half the students that go to UNH) throw away about 25 tons of trash per month. However in May, that number rises dramatically to 121 tons due to move-out waste. Last year, the University of New Hampshire had 13 extra 30-yard dumpsters delivered to campus just to handle move-out waste. The total cost to pay for the disposal of the extra amount dumped each May is over $5000 dollars!

In an effort to reduce UNH’s impact on landfills, the UNH Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC) has initiated a new program called Trash 2 Treasure (T2T).  We collect all of the stuff that students throw away each year, store it all over the summer, and then hold a large 3-day yard sale during move-in weekend to sell it all back to students. Our goal is to create a sustainable program where we will be able to run the program next year with the money we make at the yard sale this year, and so on, for years to come.  Read the rest of this entry »
